First off i would like to thank all those that made this event a success, the tireless efforts of the officials made sure the competitor was treated to a first class tournament. The Masters in attendance for there support and the competitors for their continual effort in the arena.

With 769 competitors the 2 day event was set to be huge. We travelled down Friday evening to set up the hall, what a trip that was! Due to an accident on the M4 we sat in traffic for 2 hours, once on site at the Rivermead Leisure Centre we flowed into operation like a well oiled machine. The mats where being laid as the 50 inch plasma screens and electronic scoring was set up. Crowd control barriers, bleaching seating, engraving machine, the customary photo stand and new this year was the on site T-shirt and hoodie printing. By 9:30pm we were almost complete, so off home for an early start in the morning.

Saturday

Arrived at 7am, fired up the screens ready for the days event. Competitor ID's were on the door awaiting collection along with the team listings for each club. Our on-line tournament entry system is by far the most advance in the country if not the world, this is probably one of the reasons the ITF has adopted both the draw and scoring systems for use at its events. The doors were opened around 8am and the bleacher seating began to fill up and the atmosphere grew.

All officials and coaches were called to the head table at 9am, we ran through the running order for the day and coaches signed off on the team sheets. The coach's were dismissed at 9:15 and we continued with umpire registration. Eighty three, yes 83! umpires registered and received their free T-shirt and ID cards. As explained our aim was to run this competition as close to international standards as possible in an effort to prepare our competitors for ITF World and European Championships. Umpires were then assigned to a ring and we were ready to start...

We kicked off with the Kids under seven patterns, at the same time opened weigh in for Juniors, Adults and seniors. We ran smoothly through the kids section and moved onto the cadets. We had several sections with over 30 entrants, these were divided into pools and placed on separate rings and the finalist brought together on completion of the pools. With the six rings running continuously all day we steamed through the divisions and finished off with the Senior (Over 36) sections.

By 6pm we had completed all Patterns, Sparring, Special Technique and Power sections. We wrapped up the final medal presentations, signed out for the day and made our way home, or the local hotels for those that were staying over :-)

Sunday

Not such an early start, but still on site for 8am, the doors were opened as were prepared for the Junior and Adult divisions. Umpires congregated at the top table for 9am. Quick meeting and the umpires were assigned to ring, we opened the late weigh in and we were off.

Starting with the Junior Patterns on all six rings in addition we opened the adult Special Technique on a dedicated area. As we moved through the divisions is was plain to see that there were world class athletes in attendance. Closing on 4pm we were coming to an end of the divisions when we were approached by Italy requesting a team sparring match. England were only too happy to obliged, and with such a talent pool it was easy to quickly select 5 of our top internationals. England performed impressively and took the gold medal and brought the day to a closed.

Clearing down the arena in record time with the help of the officials and competitors and were on our way home by 6:30pm.

This event is now attracting international attention and along with the usual attendees, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Ireland this year saw Nepal and  South Africa attend. The event is a sanctioned ITF tournament and as such all organisations are in membership. I believe that this is the largest ITF event in Europe attracting many of the current World Champions, if you walk away with a medal here you can ensure yourself that you are one of the top competitors in Europe.

Whilst other events are flagging and loosing momentum, blaming the recession ours are going from strength to strength and seeing a steady 10% growth each year. We make no false claims that this is the one to win or the biggest in my area, we can guarantee that no other event is in the same league.
